Everlasting Peace
Shere Fraser & Metric System 1981
Everlasting Peace carries a rare tenderness that lingers long after the final notes fade.
A deeply expressive flute forms the heart of the piece, its melodies unfolding with quiet sensitivity. Surrounding it, spacious drone textures create a soft horizon while the steady sound of ocean waves breathes gently beneath the surface. Together they shape an atmosphere that feels like standing at the edge of an endless sea at sunset, where beauty and longing coexist in a way that is difficult to put into words.
The track reflects a moment of emotional depth, where sadness and hope seem to move side by side. The flute does not dramatize feeling; it releases it with restraint. Each phrase feels deliberate, carried by breath and guided by stillness.
Water becomes both grounding force and symbol. The flowing waves offer continuity, while subtle environmental details add light and openness to the soundscape. One can almost imagine distant seabirds and sunlight filtering through breaks in the clouds, creating a sense of quiet refuge.
Shere Fraser, a Canadian-born flutist and composer now based in the Pacific Northwest, brings a lifelong devotion to wind instruments into this collaboration. Her background in neoclassical and new age traditions is evident in the clarity and grace of her phrasing.
Metric System 1981, the ambient project of Frankfurt-based composer Michael Schacht, provides the expansive sonic foundation. His warm, meditative textures create space rather than structure, allowing the flute to breathe freely within a wide and immersive atmosphere.
Everlasting Peace does not seek grand gestures. It offers something quieter and perhaps more lasting. A moment by the sea at sunset. A breath held between sorrow and acceptance. A gentle reminder that even in farewell, there can be light.
