Listening Tree – slowed and reverb
Willebrant
There is a quiet gravity to this piece from Willebrant, one that settles slowly and deliberately.
A gently slowed drone forms the core, accompanied by soft synth pads that evolve almost imperceptibly over time. Nothing moves abruptly. Instead, the textures breathe in long, patient arcs, creating a tender, enveloping sonic fabric. The result is deeply calming, a soundscape that invites the listener to surrender to stillness rather than observe it.
The music feels physical in its softness. It does not simply surround the ears; it seems to move through the body, smoothing tension and softening the edges of thought. Time begins to loosen its grip. One can float within the layers, allowing awareness to drift into a state of quiet suspension.
Karl Willebrant, the Naarm/Melbourne-based bassist and producer behind Willebrant, crafts immersive field drone works that blend bass guitar, found instruments, synthesizers and field recordings. His approach emphasizes atmosphere and emotional resonance, creating expansive textures that evoke inner landscapes as much as external ones.
In this composition, that vision is beautifully realized. It is not dramatic or declarative. It is gentle, patient and profoundly serene. A truly beautiful work, offering an open space where the listener can rest without resistance.
