Liminal
Tapani Rinne, RA-UL
There are moments in life that resist definition.
Moments when one chapter has already come to an end, yet the next has not fully begun. Moments suspended between certainty and possibility, where meaning remains just beyond reach. These thresholds, often described as liminal spaces, form the foundation of Liminal, a new collaboration between Finnish artists Tapani Rinne and RA-UL.
Rather than offering answers, Liminal lingers within questions. The piece inhabits a state of becoming, dwelling in a space where sound exists before interpretation and where meaning has not yet taken shape. Abstract textures, breath-like winds and fragile melodic fragments drift through the composition, creating the sensation that something is gradually emerging from the horizon of perception, yet never fully reveals itself.
The result is neither traditional ambient nor contemporary jazz in the conventional sense. Instead, Liminal unfolds as a landscape of subtle movement and quiet tension. Silence and sound, presence and absence, clarity and ambiguity remain in constant dialogue. The music does not seek resolution. It invites the listener to remain within uncertainty and to experience it not as a void, but as a place of possibility.
For Tapani Rinne and RA-UL, the collaboration became an exploration of these in-between states. The piece embraces restraint, allowing space to become as meaningful as the sounds themselves. Small details emerge and recede. Familiar shapes dissolve before they can be fully grasped. What remains is an atmosphere that feels simultaneously intimate and elusive, like a memory that has not yet happened.
In a culture increasingly driven by immediacy and certainty, Liminal offers an alternative. It encourages a slower form of listening, one that does not rush toward interpretation but instead finds value in ambiguity. The work suggests that not everything meaningful arrives fully formed. Some things reveal themselves gradually, through patience, attention and presence.
Perhaps the most important moments in our lives begin in exactly this way.
Not with certainty.
But with the quiet feeling that something is beginning to emerge.
